Air Transportation - Introduction & Game

Happy, happy Transportation – Air Transportation

We moved in to our last session of the transportation theme – air transportation. We shall explore what we can learn here for the next two weeks.

Teacher: Name me some air transportation that you know.

Children: Aeroplane, helicopter, hot air balloon, jet etc.

Teacher: We have cars, train or boat. Why do we travel by air transportation?

Zhen Yuan: To go to Genting or Legoland. (Other children argued that can go by bus or train.)

Yu Xi: Because the bus cannot go into Singapore. (Other children also argued that there’s bridge where bus or car can go into Singapore. From here, I hinted the children about the duration of travelling from here to Singapore by drawing the clock. Showing them if we started the journey at 8am, it will take us about 5 hours to reach Singapore by car. As a result we might only arrive about 1pm.)

Bee Chien: Because sometimes got sea. Boat is slow.

Wei Lok: Because got small small river.

Jia Jia: Because plane can very faster little bit. (What do you mean? Faster than the car is it? She nodded.) Yes, faster than a car. 

Then I showed them the world atlas that we had in the school. From the world atlas the children can see clearly that some places can be reached by land transportation while some have to use water or air. At the same time, explained to them about the different duration to take from one place to another. Now the children somehow caught the concept of travelling by air is faster than water transportation.

We played a game. This is a simple game. When the children heard the name of things that I shouted that can fly, they will fly like an aeroplane. If the name of things that I shouted cannot fly, they have to do the landing gesture or just squat down quietly waiting for the next instruction to take off again. We had a few rounds of this before getting everyone to cool down to call it a day. 

"Fly, fly, fly, I'm an aeroplane!"

Squat down as the name given cannot fly.
