Water has power!!

These two days, we used some time for our English phonics class. Therefore, our thematic class was only for about half an hour.

We went through some readings about water generates energy for electricity etc. Then, with the container I have in hand, I placed a ball in it and get the children to push it, the water level will go up. Hopefully with such experiment, the children would understand that water will give way to objects. Then, we had a demonstration by getting the children to stand in a small group while I push them. They pushed me back.

On Friday, some of the kids brought some items from home to try to see if it floats or will push the water level higher, therefore, I prepared the container with water for them to check it out by themselves.

Due to the bad condition of the haze, school was closed on 15th September 2015 (Tuesday) & it's Malaysia Day on 16th September 2015 (Wednesday) which is a public holiday. As a result, there's no blog update for these 2 days.

Float or Sink?

Today, I brought in a square transparent container into the class. I filled it up with some water. The children could see the object clearly from where they sat. Then, each of them will pick an object from their classroom (preferably not picking up the similar items).

Then, one by one will come out with their object in their hand to put it into the water. Before they place their object in the water, the children will predict if the object will either float or sink. If their prediction is correct, the children will cheer loudly.

Reading on Water

These 2 days, we went through some books on water. To see the different forms of water, to understand what is float and sink. From the book, the children get to understand the concept of float and sink. It looked easy and simple for us yet for young children, they still needed some time to digest the concept of float and sink.

Therefore, I told the children that we shall conduct some experiment next week to see which objects could float and sink.

We also read some other short story about water.

3 Forms of Water

Today, we started off by observing the solid form of the water. Each of them hold a piece of ice cube in their hand. At first they were quite excited about it, yet, after a while, they started to complain that it was too cold to be hold. Therefore, I get them to put it all into the pot that I have prepared.

With all the ice cube in the pot, I heated it up on the portable stove. The children observed the changes of the temperature in it. It took it a while for the water to get boil. With such opportunity, I introduced the freezing point and boiling point to them.

After a while, the water started to boil, I opened the lid a little for the children to look at the vapour that comes out of it. With this, I also can blend in the experiment of the water cycle.

I let the water to continue boiling for another few seconds before switching off the stove. Then, we started a for awhile before I opened the lid again. Immediately, the children could see the dripping of the water drops from the lid which looked like rain. The children were amazed to know this.

We did again for those who missed the scene.

The characteristic of water

The characteristic of water

Today, we studied about the characteristic of water. It comes in 3 forms - liquid, solid and gas. Besides that, water can also dissolves sugar, salt and other materials.

We studied the water cycle again and could that water existed in different forms in the cycle.

In order for the children to see the changes of the forms of water, I brought them to the kitchen. I get each of them to pick a cup and put in some water into their cup. Then one by one, they pour the water into the ice cube tray. Then, I put the ice cube tray into the refrigerator in front of them. I told them that we shall look at it tomorrow.

The Usage of Water

The Usage of Water

We refer to a encyclopedia on water which is written in English. From here, we learned that water has many usages such as for drinking, washing, for the plants, for the sea creatures or river etc. Water is very important for human beings as well as animals.

I guided the children to understand water that comes out from our body such as sweat and urine. Suddenly, they realised that they were water from the body. Then, we also discussed about the important of water for the fish and other water creatures.

From the picture of the earth which we found in the book, it stated that almost 75% of the earth is covered by water. Just like our body.

Book Sharing - It's Raining

This lovely short storybook is about 2 kids who wanted to play in the rain. Although adults always wanted kids to stay at home during rainy days, yet, they found a way to play in the rain (they wore raincoats).

The children were excited when come to raincoats. Some said they have raincoats at home. Some said they only have umbrellas at home. So I told them that they could bring either a raincoat or an umbrella to school. We might be able to use it during a rainy day in the afternoon.

Label the Water Cycle

I have printed 4 terms for the water cycle - evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection.

Before we did the labeling onto the water cycle project that we did yesterday, I have to explain the meaning of the terms and we did some body movements according to the terms.

Then, with the body movements, I let the children make some guesses at which location should we place the term.

Water Cycle Project

After watching the video the other day, I think we should put all the information out on a piece of paper so that the children could understand it much more. Therefore, I brought in some materials such as a hole puncher, some colour papers, a big drawing paper, scissors and glue.

At first, we discussed about the items that we needed to put in on our drawing paper on the white board. Some suggested to having clouds, sun, rain, river, sea, mountain, grass etc.

Therefore, I delegated out the task to each of them to complete the project today.

Zi Yue was drawing and cutting the sun. Sueanne and Leow Xun were drawing clouds. Eugene and Lucas helped to punch holes on blue colour paper to make raindrops. Then, Suzanne helped to draw some grass, flowers and butterfly. Lastly, Yi Ern helped to draw and cut the sea and river.

Then, once the children were done with their parts, they started to paste their drawings onto the drawing paper according to what we had plan on the whiteboard.

Finally, this is how the picture looked like:

Water Cycle

I asked the children to figure where could they get water from.

Yi Ern: longkang (the drain), sea
Leow Xun: From the clouds, tap, swimming pool
Zi Yue: 河 (river) , pond

At first, Zi Yue kept telling me that we can get water from land. Therefore, I explained to her about the water cycle. However, the children don't seem to understand. Therefore, I brought them to watch a short video about water cycle. Hopefully with such input, the children could get the idea much faster.

Vote for a title

Date: 1st September 2015
Day: Tuesday
Time: 4:00-5:00pm
Class: Pomegranate
Theme: Water
Teacher: Ms Yeong

Vote for a title

Today, we started off by voting for a title for our "water" theme. Some said "I love water" yet, most of them were telling me the usage of water instead. Therefore, I have to step in and suggested a few topic for them to choose, the title were as followed:

1) I love water
2) Water is so FUN!
3) Amazing water

After a round of explanation and reading the title to them, they finally agreed to use - Water is so FUN! as their title!

Then, we had a short discussion on the items or things that we could do with this topic.

The children suggested a few things such as followed:

1) Water can be used to wash
2) Why we need water?
3) Where do the water comes from?
4) Games?
5) Story?

Hopefully with such brainstorming, the children could find out some other activity that they could do with water.

Final Day for Animal Theme

Final Day for Animal Theme

Today would be the final day for the children to be having the animal theme. I believe they have enjoyed it a lot especially when I arranged a drama session for them to play along. No other children would want to act as the lion except for Xiang Qin, as a result, she is the lion today. The children chose their own character and they acted it on their own with very little guidance from my side.

From their laughter and their body language, I could see that they had a good time.

For the next two months, the thematic class will change its' time to 4:00-5:00pm. Hopefully with a smaller group of them, we still can enjoyed our English thematic class.
