National Day & new topic voting

National Day is just around the corner. I believe the children had already learnt quite a lot during their Mandarin thematic class in the morning. However, I wanted the children to express their thoughts and information that they know in English. To my surprise, the children couldn't give me much reply even I lure them with rewards (candies).

I started off by asking them if they needed to come to school on next Monday (31st Auguts 2015). They hesitate for a while and said yes. I doubted their answer and they immediately changed their reply. Children are quite observant in some sense.

Basically, we talked about the colours on the Malaysia flag - red, yellow, blue and white. I guided them to understand their age and the country's age. It took them a while to realize that connection. Anyhow, we did a sum to get the age of our country - Malaysia is celebrating its 58th National Day this year.

Then, we moved on to count the points that they could see on the yellow star. The children could only name me a few states such as Kedah, Selangor, Sabah, Melaka, Pulau Pinang and Johor. Therefore, I have to guide them to name the rest of the states and the federal government.

After the National Day session, we had a short break. After that, I divided the class into 6 and 5 years old. From next week onwards, the 6 years old children will start their pre-primary school programme for 2 months and after that they will be busy getting ready for the school year end performance.

I took the 5 years old children to a side to vote for a new topic. They had suggested 3 topics to be chosen:
1) About myself
2) Water
3) Cloth & clothes

After a round of explanation and voting, finally, "water" received the most vote. As a result, that would be our new theme topic from next week.

Learn to read the lyrics & drama

The children had some difficulty in following the song as they were not very familiar or even not sure what the lyrics were saying.

Therefore, today, I wrote the lyrics on the board and get the children to read along. Then, we try to see what kind of hand or body movements that we could use for the lyrics that we read earlier.

Basically, I only wrote these lyrics on the board:

In the jungle, the mighty jungle,
The lion sleeps tonight
In the jungle, the quiet jungle,
The lion sleeps tonight

In the village, the peaceful village,
The lion sleeps tonight
In the village, the quiet village,
The lion sleeps tonight

Hush my darling, don't fear my darling,
The lion sleeps tonight
Hush my darling, don't fear my darling,
The lion sleeps tonight.

With the hand and body movements that we had added into the lyrics, we played the drama again this time with the hope that the children could remember to add in the hand and body movements together.

Drama with some background music

Today, the children still wanted to play with the drama performance. They wanted to try to be a different animal from previously. Therefore, I get them to draw lots. Most of them were quite happy with their picks.

Today, I have also picked a background music for the children to add in to their drama. Even though it's about 1 minute song, yet without any designed movement, I still finds it too long. Maybe we could figure out what kind of movement we can add in for this song. The song is "Lion Sleeps Tonight".

Here were some of the pictures taken during the activity:

Shang En is the lion today.

Oh, look. Here comes the elephant.
(Suzanne, Zi Yue & Xin Yee)

"Uh, Uh, ah ah ah!" the monkeys said!
(Leow Xun, Sueanne, Chloe & Lucas)

"Stop! You cannot eat me! I am too clever!" said the monkeys.

Here comes the crocodiles!
(Yee Shuen, Yong Jun & Aiden)

We are the zebras!
(Jing Heng, Eugene & Rachel)

"Stop! You cannot eat me! I am too tall!" said the giraffes.
(Zhi Yi, Xiang Qin & Qiao Yi)

Art Work - Spiral Snake

As the costume was not ready today, therefore, I chose an art work for the children to work on it today.

I have printed out the outline of a spiral snake onto the cardboard for the children to cut it out accordingly.

Before they cut it out, they needed to decorate their snake. Some of them just added in some simple pattern. Some of them coloured their snake in colourful colour.

Then, once they had decorated their snake, they could cut it out and I helped them to punch a hole on the snake tail. The children learned to tie a string with a yarn string onto the snake's tail.

They could let their snake turned in circle.

This was just a acting activity for the children to express their talents, here were the list of characters chosen by the children themselves:

lion: Chloe
elephant: Qiao Yi, Sueanne, Xin Yee
crocodile: Lucas, Aiden, Yee Shuen
monkey: Xiao Xuan, Rachel, Shang En, Zi Yue
zebra: Leow Xun, Suzanne, Zhi Yi, Yi Ern,
giraffe: Xiang Qin, Jing Heng, Eugene, Yong Jun

Once the children had chosen their character, I explained the flow of the show to them. As it's quite simple and straight forward, the children could understand it very well.

All the kids were laughing loudly when they were in the act. The children hope they could act in different character, I promised them that we shall do it with costume if I could find any for them next week.

Story Sharing & acting

I wish that the children could come out an idea for the year end performance according to animals. Some of the children came to the front to share their stories such as Zhi Yi, Zi Yue etc.

However, most of their stories were just concentrating on just one or two animals. It couldn't be used to involve the whole class. Suddenly, I got an idea from a book which we read before sometimes ago about a hungry lion who wanted to look for food. The children remembered the story and were quite excited about it.

Then, we discussed on the animals that we could act and then, we also discussed about the sequence of the animals that would appear in our performance.

Due to insufficient time, we have to continue with the discussion and the performance tomorrow.

Most of the children could get those numbers joint correctly while some needed guidance where there's a part which confused them.

After that, the children could coloured the pictures according to their memory. However, some of them coloured their ostrich in all sorts of colours instead of just black or brown.

Then, after that, the children started to paste the grass onto their art work.

Art and Craft - Tiger (palm printing) - Part II

The children had done their palm printing on last Friday. Then, today, I wanted the children to add on some details for their tiger art. Some of the children said that it doesn't look like a tiger. I hinted to them that something needed to be added to their pictures such as stripes, the face of a tiger, the tail etc.

Some of them could add in the details on their own while some will need to refer to the books. No pictures were taken during the activity as the children were asking for guidance.

On the other hand, I suggested that they could collect some grass from home (the grass in the school were trimmed on last Friday) so that they could add in to their art work as though the tiger is walking among the grass.

Hopefully, someone will bring some grass this week so that we could work on it.

I will be following another two classes on a field trip to the police museum and a visit to the Fire Station, therefore, there will be no blog update for 4th August 2015.

Today, I mixed the colour of yellow and red to get the colour of orange. However, different portion of colours would turn out different tones of orange. Some of the children said that the orange looked more of a dark red. I guess, not enough of yellow.

Anyhow, the children still carried on with their palm printing on a piece of paper. In order to get all the work done before letting the children off, I didn't get the chance to take any pictures for this activity.

Hopefully I will have some pictures for the extension of this activity next week.

Different types of hunting and tiger

Time: 4:30-5:30pm

Different types of hunting and tiger

Today, we focused on the different types of hunting that the tiger would used. Basically there were 3 of it,
- walking closer and closer towards its prey
- giving an ambush (waiting for the prey to come closer)
- attacking animals by the water side (tiger is not afraid of water)

We also learned that the cubs will stay with their mother tiger for about 18 months before leaving the group. There will be a ceremony for it. The strongest tiger will leave the group by sucking the mum's nibbles for the last time. I find the children seems to look a little sad when they heard that the cubs are leaving the family. Therefore, I quickly went through it and move on to another part of the encyclopedia.

The children also noticed that the tiger will scratch the tree trunk. They asked what the tiger is doing. There were a few ways for the tiger to mark their territory.
- to pee on a spot, usually on the tree
- to wipe its saliva onto the tree
- to leave scratch marks on the tree bark

The children were quite amused when they learned that tiger pee at the tree. I get them to imagine what dogs love to do. Then, they seems to understand it. Two tigers will defend their territory no matter how.

There also introduced Siberian Tiger in the book which it only looked a little different on their face. They look much bulkier.

Tomorrow we shall carry out the art and craft for tiger.

More on Tigers

Before we move in further about tiger, I played them a video today. Hopefully by watching it, the children could understand the tiger more.

Video Sharing: Bengal Tiger in HD

From the video, the children were amazed to learn that tiger could swim. The tiger is nearly invisible among the tall grass with its stripes on their body. Besides that, the children also noticed that tiger is quite a big animal and could leap very far.

After the video, we went back to class to continue with our encyclopedia about tiger. In the book, it mentioned that tiger loves bathing in the water. Now, the children agreed with that. They also learned that tiger is a very strong animal which it could kill a bigger size prey.

I told the children that we shall do an art work on tiger if possible by this week either on Thursday or Friday.
