Video Sharing - Wild Kratts - Cheetah Racer

I found a clear video about Wild Kratts that I could share with the children. In this episode, it introduced about cheetah. The children were not very familiar with it. Therefore, they enjoyed the video very much. Some of them said that the cheetah looked like a big cat, some said it's cute and some even started to learn to leap and run like a cheetah after watching the video.

We might be able to explore more about cheetah and also any animals that related to it next week.

Preparation of Board Game Making (Part III)

I have done with Group 1 & 2 yesterday. I worked with Group 3 today.

The children didn't bring any dice from home. Therefore, I make one by using cardboard. It's quite a big dice so that the children see the dots clearly.

Now, the children have dice but they don't have any pins or representative items to start with the game. I have some leftovers of the colour papers that the children worked on last week to do the board game's step. I showed them how they could draw some pictures on it to represent themselves.

Group 1 & 2 shall start playing their board game today. As the rules was not really set for each group, I let them freely explore the game first. Unfortunately, some of them couldn't follow with the rest of the group and they started to argue. So I suggested that they discuss some rules before starting the game.

I managed to complete the discussion and wrote down all the content for the board game for Group 3. Hopefully by tomorrow, they could start to play with it.

Preparation of Board Game Making (Part II)

Today, we continued with what we left from last Friday. I had prepared the pictures of the animals that the children had mentioned. I distributed it to the groups. I wanted the children to discuss of the places where they want and the content of it.

Today, I only managed to work with two groups of children while the other group will have to wait till tomorrow.

Basically, I guided the children to put the animals in order and then, we also discussed about the content. Most of them were suggested by the children themselves while some I modified it a little. For example, for one of the group, they chose a bird. Aiden said the bird pecked him and he has to move two steps backward.

The children said they might want to look for a dice from home to play with the game tomorrow.

Preparation of Making Board Game

With the figures that I have gathered from the children, I guided them to cut out some colours paper to make it into square boxes as their steps. Each piece of colour paper will make into 24 pieces of squares, therefore, I prepare a few pieces for them as long as it's sufficient to cover the 180 steps that they needed.

Most of the children work in pairs while some work individually. All of them quickly get the paper cut and all gathered into the basket that I prepared.

After that, each group was given 60 pieces of assorted square colour papers to be arranged on the manila card that they have chosen. The children could arranged in all sorts of way as long as there's a starting point with an ending point.

The children managed to complete it today. We shall continue with other details next week.

Preparation of Making the Board Game

Today, I get the children to form groups. There were about 18 of them. Therefore, I get them to form 6 people in a group. There were a few matters that they needed to discuss about when they were in a group:

1) How many steps they wanted to do on their board game? (between 30-60)
2) How many animals they wanted to use? (around 10-12 animals)
3) Name the animals that they wanted to use.

It took them a while to come to a conclusion and each group came out to tell me their replies.

Group 1: Devon, Chloe, Aiden, Yong Jun, Jing Heng & Eugene
Steps: 60
Animals : 10 (tiger, bird, elephant, leopard, giraffe, cow, porcupine, tapir, ape and snake)

Group 2: Shang En, Lucas, Yi Ern, Xiao Xuan, Suzanne & Xin Yee
Steps: 60
Animals: 10 (leopard, tiger, lion, zebra, giraffe, bird, panda, snake, rabbit and monkey)

Group 3: Leow Xun, Sueanne, Zhi Yi, Xiang Qin, Qiao Yi and Zi Yue
Steps: 60
Animals: 10 ( lion, elephant, crocodile, rabbit, snake, tiger, hippopotamus, fish, penguin and antelope)

With all these information I have gather, I could start to prepare the necessary materials for the children to work on it.

Making an Animal Board Games

It would be a very lengthy topic to do if we introduced all the animals one by one. Therefore, my intention of having this short theme topic is to introduce the names of animals and carry out some activities that we think is possible. Therefore, I suggested to make use of the animals and create a board game.

It actually took me quite a while to explain to the children how does a board game work. Some of them could understand while some still not so sure what is all about.

However, I get the children to vote if they wanted to make one big board game or they worked in groups. After some discussions, most of them voted to create smaller board game. As a result, I divided the class into 3 big groups with about 6 in a group. I wish they could work together and create a fun and interesting board game for their fellow classmates to play.

This week we shall concentrate on making the board games. If parents have any idea or suggestions for the board game, you may leave your comments here. Thank you.

Zoo Trail Assignment

Today, the children continued with the zoo trail assignment that they had not completed in the zoo yesterday. With some guidance, the children tried to recall the journey after lunch. Most of them could remember the sequence of the animals that we saw.

Then, I listed down the sequence on the board. Hopefully, the children could search for the pictures of the animals and pasted into their zoo trail assignment. Only 5 groups of children brought their pictures back. Therefore, the rest of it will have to wait for their partners to bring back the pictures to complete their assignment.

Field Trip - Visit to the National Zoo

Early in the morning, the children had already got ready with their stuff. Around 8:30am, we boarded the bus and headed for the National Zoo. The weather was good, the children were in high spirit, ready to paste those animals pictures in their zoo trail assignment.

We reached the zoo around 10am. After settled down everyone, we started off by visiting the Panda Centre. Pandas were sleeping.  I thought we could see them moving at least. No luck!

Then, we moved on to the ape centre and other animals. The children had some hard time getting started with the assignment as they also needed to jot down the names of the animals. They didn't know where to look for the name. After a few try, they realized that at every section there's a notice board. It is the information about the animals. Some of them even try to read about the animals' diet, ages etc.

We had lunch at about 1pm. After that, we moved on to the other part of the zoo. This time, the children will search for the information board to confirm the name of the animals. Wow, they learn quite fast! Due to insufficient time, we couldn't stop at each animal section to complete the assignment. Therefore, I get the children to help to remember our journey on that part so that we could continue with it when we go back to school.

Lastly, the visiting was ended by watching animal performance by the zoo. The children were quite excited yet exhausted.

Reminder for the Field Trip - Visiting the National Zoo

The children were quite excited today to know that they will be going to visit the National Zoo on next Monday. At the same time, we went through some reminders of being in the zoo on Monday such as they have to stay in groups and not to run about in the zoo. As we will be going to visit the Panda Centre, the children were reminded that they needed to remind silence in the centre itself.

Besides this, I also prepared a worksheet for the children to work in groups during our visit to the zoo. They needed to record down the zoo trail by pasting the picture of the animals that they saw along the way. With this opportunity, I get the children to fix their partners and to sort out things that we might need to bring along such as pencils, erasers, glue, sharpener etc.

I sorted out all the pictures into envelopes for the children to hold in hand. I only picked about 20 animals that they children might be interested to know. They will find out the pictures of all those animals on next Monday.

Worksheet - mammals & reptiles (part II)

Today, the children continue with the 2 assignments that I delegated yesterday. There were 6 animals printed on half of an A4 paper. They needed to identify whether that animal is a mammal or reptile. Once they have organised it, they could cut and paste it onto the second section of the worksheet.

This is how the worksheet looked like when it is done:

With the information given yesterday, I prepared a worksheet for the children to work on it. The assignment was divided into 2 sheets - mammals & reptiles. Each worksheet was divided into 2 sections. The first section, the children needed to choose and colour the correct answers while the other section, they have to identify the category of the animals.

We only managed to complete the first section for both assignments. We have to continue with it tomorrow.

Voting for a new topic

There would be a field trip visiting the National Zoo. The children agreed to change their thematic topic to zoo animals. It would be a short topic and hopefully the children would enjoy it too.

Since the children agreed to change, we need to vote for a new name for our topic. Therefore, some suggestions were given and the children could only vote once. Finally, most of the children voted "I Love Zoo Animals".

The children shared about what animals that they want to see or learn from the zoo.

Teacher: If you go to the zoo, what animals that you would like to visit or learn?
Leow Xun: ape, gorilla
Zi Yue: rabbit
Lucas: fish
Aiden: ostrich
Sueanne: giraffe
Yi Ern: snake
Chloe: tiger
Qiao Yi: horse

Mother's Day Card

Today, the children continued with the making of the Mother's Day card. After the children had coloured their heart shape origami, they decorated it with some scrape colour papers that I gave them. Then, they pasted their heart onto the colour paper that I had prepared for each of them.

I placed "Mom", "Happy", "Mother's", "Day" in four different bowls. The children needed to collect each word from each bowl and arranged it accordingly. Most of them could do it individually while some needed some guidance and corrections. However, all of them managed to complete the task for the day. They were quite happy with it and wanted to give a surprise to their mother.

Here were some of the pictures taken for the activity:

Heart Origami

This coming Sunday is Mother's Day. Today, I demonstrated a very simple heart shape origami for the children to follow. Most of them could get the folding done well. I'm surprised. They have grown up so much compare to last year.

Then, once they have done with most of the folding, I helped them to glue some parts of their heart shape and get them to colour their heart in colourful colour. All of them could manage to complete this task today. We shall continue with the rest of the card making tomorrow.

Why should we keep our nails clean?

Yesterday, I had played a video on manicure. The children learn some words from there as well such as manicure, nails, massage etc. By using this opportunity, I bring in the sub-topic on nails hygiene. Hopefully, the children could see the important of keeping their nails clean.

Teacher: If we don't trim our nails, will our nails grow? [some said yes while some said no]
(Then, I draw them a picture of a hand with long finger nails, then the children understand what does grow means.)
Children: Ee, it looks like a monster.
Children: It looks like a lion hand.
Teacher: We need to trim our nails so that it won't look like a monster.
Children: Long finger nails will make me painful.
Teacher: Yes, long finger nails are sharp. You will get hurt.
Children: Long nails got germs.
Teacher: Yes, besides washing your palm and finger, you need to wash your nails as well.

When I asked the children to observe their finger nails, most of them said they have short nails, not long like the one I drew on the board.

Manicure

I modified some of the actions for the "Song of the Sea" so that the children could do it more smoothly. We practiced it with the action and song together today. The children were quite satisfied with their own performance.

Then, I guided the children to think of any occupations that are related to the sea. After giving some hints, they managed to say out - fisherman. Then, from there, I also mentioned about fishmonger. Hopefully the children could link the connection between these two occupations.

We carried on with our lesson from last week which we were talking about beautician. Therefore, today, I played them a video about a beautician who is demonstrating how to do manicure.

Video: how to give a perfect salon manincure

From the video itself, the children get to know about their nails. To look at their finger nails closely.

Action for the song

Date: 30th April 2015
Day: Thursday

Action for the song

Today, we started our lesson by reading the passages from the 1000 sentences. We read the following passages:

1) Making Friends
2) In the Home

Then, we read through the lyrics for "Song of the Sea" and the children discussed about the action to add into the song. We did that twice and the children could actually try to relate it with the music. However, the children were not quite familiar with the lyrics, therefore, they somehow will not sure what's the next action. If the children like the song and the action, we might be able to practise and do it for our year end performance. Yet, it's still too early to decide what programme we shall come out with.
