Sorting out the worksheet & book sharing

As we will be having the egg sandwich project tomorrow and I needed the help of the children to sort out the worksheet before the end of the thematic class. Therefore, I used today's session to get the children to sort out their worksheet and staple them together so that I could put it into their personal files later.

After that, I shared 2 books with the children which were not related to our theme.

The 2 books are as followed:

Simon Rickety's The Peanut

Julia Donaldson's Room on the Broom

Task Delegating for Sandwich Project

Task Delegating for Sandwich Project

Today, we sort out the ingredients that the school could provide for us. Basically, the ingredients are bread, lettuce, tomatoes, eggs, cheese mayo and butter. I shall bring some apples from home.

By looking at those ingredients, we needed to delegate some task for the children in order to run the project smoothly.

Therefore, I listed out the task for the children to consider and choose voluntarily. We shall have 15 children to carry out the task on Friday.

Here is the list of task for them:

1) To handle the boiled eggs & to add cheese mayo to the smash eggs : 9 kids
2) To slice the tomatoes: 2 kids (with supervision from the teacher)
3) To slice the apples: 2 kids (with supervision from the teacher)
4) To wash the lettuce: 2 kids

Hopefully with the list, the children could handle their own task and run the project smoothly.

We shall do this egg sandwich with vegetables & fruits on Friday.

Discussion on the last project for food

Today, the Wushu teacher gets the children to stretch their legs and to see the flexibility of their waist.

The food theme is going to end this coming Friday, I wanted to do the last food project with the children which it will include food that appears in the categories on the food pyramid.

Initially, I wanted the children to suggest any kind of food but none of them got the meaning of my request. Therefore, I suggested that we could do sandwich. Suddenly, the children started to give ideas of ingredients to put in a sandwich.

carbohydrates: bread
vegetables and fruits: tomatoes, lettuce, apples, cucumber, capsicum
protein: hotdogs, eggs, cheese, tuna
fats, oil & sweets: butter

I shall discuss with the school on the ingredients and hopefully we could carry this activity out by end of the week.

Worksheet - Taste of the Day

In order for the children to relate the activity to their daily life, I prepared a worksheet for the activities that we had done for the past one whole week. I only printed some of the pictures that I could find online for the children to group them according to its taste.

This is how the worksheet looked like after the children had done it:

For those older kids, they added in the food that I didn't print for them.

After that, I also shared a story book with them - The Color of US by Karen Kartz.

Taste of the Day Activity : Day 5 - Bitter Day

Taste of the Day Activity : Day 5 - Bitter Day

Rachel passed me a small tumbler of drink in the morning for me to put it into the refrigerator. I was wondering what other bitter food the children would bring for the activity this afternoon.

As I stepped into the class, most of the children shook their head when I asked for any food to share with the class. Suzanne happily took out a bitter gourd from her bag and Yee Ern brought a bottle of herbal tea to share with the class.

So today, we have 2 different kinds of drinks and a bitter gourd. What are we going to do with the bitter gourd? Leow Xun suggested that we could fry it with eggs. I think that would be a good idea. So I went to the kitchen to see if there are any eggs left. Fortunately, there were three. I just took one.

Quickly, I prepared all the necessary things to fry the bitter gourd with eggs. We only used half of the bitter gourd and an egg.

Here were some pictures taken for frying the bitter gourd with eggs:

At first, some of the children dare to try while some just look on. I encouraged them to take it with the eggs. After tasting it, most of them came back for more. Some even suggested that we shall fry the other half of the bitter gourd.

After tasting the bitter gourd, I get Yee Ern to share the herbal tea that she brought. On the other hand, Rachel finds it difficult to pour the coffee out from the tumbler that she brought, therefore, I have to help her to share the coffee.

Everyone enjoyed the "Bitter Day" today. I'm so happy and proud of them.

Taste of the Day Activity: Day 4 - Sour Day

Date: 21st April 2016
Day: Thursday
Time: 4:00-5:30 pm
Class: Pomegranate
Theme: I Love Food
Teacher: Ms Yeong

Taste of the Day Activity: Day 4 - Sour Day

Today, we started off by sharing Si Ying's book - Hug Me. The children enjoyed the story.

After that, the children get ready for the activity today. They quickly put the sour food or item that they bring on the table.

Buah Mo Far Kor (a kind of salty-sweet preserved fruits): Si Ying (After the children tasted it, they find it kind of sour. It's fun to see their different facial expression when eating this.)

Huamei (preserved plum) : Zun Yu (I'm not sure if the children would like it, therefore, I picked 3 and cut it into smaller pieces for Zun Yu to pass it among his friends. Out of my surprise, the children like it. )

Homemade lemon juice with sugar and honey: Rachel (Rachel said that this was prepared by her grandmother. One of the bottles is honey with sugar while the other one is lemon with honey.)

Lemon : Suzanne & Yee Ern (The children said that they didn't want to eat the lemon just like that, therefore, I kept the lemon a side for other activity in the future.)

Tomato: Yee Ern (I sliced the tomato and surprisingly, the children like it very much and finished it within 3 minutes.)

Kiwi fruit: Lucas (I cut the kiwi fruit into smaller pieces which is easier for Lucas to share among his classmates. The children said that the kiwi fruit taste pretty sour.)

Carrot Enzyme: Jia Mao (At first when I opened the container that Jia Mao brought, all the children could smell the sour smell from it and refused to try it. However, Zi Yue came forward and sounded to me that she would like to give it a try. When the children notice that Zi Yue enjoyed the drink, they all came forward with a cup to taste it. Some even asked for more.)

Sour Plum Powder: Zi Yue (She insisted that I should put some in the plate for the children to try.)

Mango: Ms Yeong (I brought in a mango that I have left in the refrigerator for days as I find it pretty hard. Before I cut it, I'm not sure if the mango is ripe or raw. Fortunately, the flesh was hard on the outside but soft on the inside. However, it tastes pretty sour though! Yet, the children enjoyed and finished it!)

Reminder: Tomorrow would be "Bitter Day". It would be the last day for our Taste of the Day activity. I do hope those who hasn't bring anything could participate tomorrow.

Taste of the Day Activity : Day 3 - Spicy Day

I'm not sure if it's because the kids don't really like spicy food or they have nothing much to share from home, however, there's only a few of them who brought things to share with their classmates today.

Here were the pictures of those who brought things to share today:

Twisties BBQ curry flavour: Mei Jia (She left early from school today, therefore, I have asked her permission to share the tidbits that she brought. Each of them only got about 2 small pieces of Twisties.)
Curry Bun: Yee Ern (At first, the kids were pretty worried that those buns would taste spicy, however, after the 1 tried, they asked for more.)
Chilli Sauce: Lucas & Ethan (We have nothing to go with the chilli sauce, therefore, they brought it home.)
Marinated ginger stick: Zun Yu (At first, I cut the ginger stick into smaller pieces thinking that the children might not be able to take it. Out of my surprise, the children find it quite tasty and asked for more.)
Ginger: Sueanne (She has also left early as she was not feeling well. I just showed the ginger to the class.)
Spicy seaweed: Jia Mao (The children love it, but I didn't dare to give them too much. Each of them got a small piece of seaweed. The children didn't find it spicy, they said it's tasty.)
Ginger Candy: Rachel (As she only brought 2, I cut the candy into smaller pieces. I thought it might be spicy for them, however, the children find it sweet instead of spicy!)
Hacks Candy: Zi Yue (I cut a candy for Zi Yue. Just in case the children couldn’t take the spiciness of the candy. Out of my surprise, the children like it. They said it's not that spicy but taste like cool mint!)

In conjunction with the World Book Day this week, the children are encourage to bring any of their favourite story book to class for sharing purpose. I picked Suzanne's favourite book and shared with the class today. The children like it very much! This book sharing event will last till Friday. Happy Reading!
