Magic Show

Sueanne said she wanted to perform a magic show for us. She needed just a coin. She placed the coin in her palm and then she covered it a little with the other hand. Then, suddenly, the coin started to climb out of her hand. The children were amazed. (I didn't get the chance to take any photos and videos as I was busy trying to guide her to explain her action to her friends.)

Then, Lik Shin said he also had another magic trick to show his friend but failed. Lik Shin just laughed at his own performance.

I brought in 2 experiments for the children to see.

#1: Guiding the Spacecraft
With the use of a cylinder and some yarn, I can guide the cylinder to move up and down whenever I wanted.

I let the children played with it after the demonstration.

#2: I prepared a coin, a transparent glass and water for the second experiment. This experiment is about the refraction of lights. I placed the coin under the transparent glass. The children could still see the coin there. However, when I filled up the glass with water, the coin seems disappear. The children couldn't believe their eyes and requested me to redo the demonstration.

After the demonstration, the children get to try it out on their own. However, no photos were taken for the second part.

Magician

I'm not planning to introduce magician to the children as they might not know who they are. I'm planning to bring in science experiment to show them as it looks like magic too.

Anyhow, I still play them a short video about a TV magic show that I have seen.

Space Rhymes

The children had their Wushu class today. The teacher guided them to work in patterns and some practise on the basic stretching.

Then, the children wanted to adapt the dinosaur rhyme with the astronaut. Even though it doesn't rhymes, yet it was created by the children. I believe that they will remember the lines better.

Here is the Astronauts Rhymes:

Five little astronauts sitting in the space.
The first one said: "Let's drive the spaceship."
The second one said: "Let's take some pictures."
The third one said: "Let's count the planets."
The fourth one said: "Let's fly, fly, fly."
The fifth one said: "Let's zoom!"

Book Sharing - The Super Smelly Alien

Some of the children had not completed their astronaut art work on Friday. Therefore, I get them quickly to complete it within 20 minutes. Then, after that, I shared a story with them. This is a story about a super smelly alien.

The children enjoyed the story very much. We all had a good laugh.

Then, I gave them each a piece of paper to draw their own alien in it before we call it a day.

Art Work: I am an astronaut with my spaceship

Yesterday, I have took the up close picture of everyone so that I can print their face out for the activity today.

I brought in some black paper, some colour papers and a cut out picture of an astronaut without a face. The children needed to use the colour paper to create their own spaceship and pasted it onto the black colour paper. After that, they need to trim the cut out picture of the astronaut before putting their face onto it and pasted it into their picture. Finally, they could decorate their pictures with stars, planets etc.

Here were some pictures taken of their finished art work:

What does an astronauts do?

Today, we were talking about astronauts. I get the children to share their thoughts about astronauts.

Teacher: Why do we have astronauts? What do you think astronauts do in space?
Leow Xun: Because we don't know the plants. What colour is the planet? Because they fly to space to see the planets.
Sueanne: Astronauts go to space to see the planet.
Zi Yue: Because they are different planet in the solar system.
Lik Shin: They take picture of the planets.
Rachel: They write the name of the planet.
Sueanne: They observe and draw the planets.

Wow, these were some of the opinions of the children about astronauts. Then, we have a book on space that mentioned a little about the job of the astronauts and the space station out there.

I played a short video about an astronaut explaining of some experiment that they could in space. The children could also see the condition of the gravity in the space. Things are floating around them. They were amazed.

Get to Know the Planet Better Activity (part II)

Only a few of the kids managed to complete the activity correctly. Therefore, today, I will have to guide at least 10 of them to complete theirs. As a result, I asked those who had completed their task the day before to help me out and guide their friends to complete their task today. Most of them were willing to do so and I only needed to guide less than 5 of them.

Here were some pictures taken during the activity:

Get to Know the Planets Better Activity

The children were supposed to have their Wushu class today. However, it was cancelled as the Wushu teacher needed to rehearse with another class for the performance on the coming sports day. Therefore, we have the full hour of class today.

I found a worksheet that the children could colour it and arranged the 8 planets accordingly. It took the children quite some time to complete the colouring today.

However, I managed to get some of them to start by cutting out the planets and arranged them onto a piece of long black paper to represent the space. The children also needed to cut out the names of the planet that was printed on the worksheet itself.

I did a sample of this activity (without colour)

Facts on the last 4 planets & song

Today, we went through the facts of the last 4 planets - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune. The children were even more amazed with the facts mentioned about these 4 planets as they were very far away from the sun.

I read them a short story about space - Here in Space, written and Illustrated by David Milgrim.

After that, I play the solar system song for them again as they didn't know how to sing it. We practise a few times before we call it a day.

Book Sharing & 4 planets in the Solar System

Lik Shin brought a book on space. It's an interesting book full with all sorts of areas to be explored. Besides that, Mei Jia also brought an astronaut toy to show to her classmates.

Then, by adapting one of the space information book that I found, we started off by learning the different names of the 4 planets from the sun - Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars today. The children were amazed by the facts about these 4 planets even including Earth. Basically, we learned about the numbers of moon, the surface temperature of each planet, the orbit period of each planet and also other interesting facts about them.

Then, I played them a song on planet - The Planets (in our Solar System)

What is space? What's so interesting about space?

I have gave some brief explanation to the children on the day before about space. However, only a few of them understand it.

Therefore, today, I guided the children to tell me what they know about space. Some mentioned about sun, star, moon, astronauts, space rocket etc.

We also talked a little about gravity and there's no gravity in space. The children also mentioned that the other teacher had shown them a video about how the astronauts pass urine in the spacecraft by using a bag.

Then, I did ask the children of their interest in space. I wanted to know what make space so special to them.

Some mentioned that space is scary, some mentioned that space is fun. Some even said that space got alien. All sorts of imagination.

Tomorrow we shall talk about the planets. Hopefully the children could focus as space is quite an abstract topic for some children.

Acting out the transportation rhymes

Today, I wrote down the rhymes on the paper and pasted it on the board. This is easier for the children to refer and read it while doing the performance.

I got 10 children to demonstrate the rhymes before getting the rest of the class to act it out.

I have recorded the 2 groups' acting on video.

We are moving into the next subtopic - space. I have reminded the children to bring any books on space if they have from home to share with their classmates.

Books on airplane, bicycle

Today, I shared 2 books with the children. First, I shared a book on airplane - Away in My Airplane by Margaret. This is a pretty simple to read book. I believe after I have read it to the kids, they could try to read it on their own.

After that, I wanted to read another book on bicycle. Yet, before I do that, I get the children to share their experience in learning to ride a bicycle. Zi Yue, Sueanne and Lik Shin came out to share their experience. They admitted that learning to ride takes a lot of courage and practise yet, they were very happy now that they could ride on their own without much help. This makes some kids envy especially for those who were still on training wheels.

Then, I shared the book - Everyone can learn to ride a bicycle by Chris Raschka.

In order to come out with a performance related to transportation, I hinted to the children that they could use any of the transport song that I have taught them. However, after some discussion, they decided to make some changes to the dinosaur rhymes that I have taught them previously.

I only suggested some, most of the wordings were suggested by the children themselves. Here is the modified version of the rhymes that they could play with it later in the future:

Five little transports sitting on a road,
The first car said, "Let's go by wheels."
The second bus said, "Let's beep, beep, beep!"
The third truck said, "It's time to load,"
The fourth bike said, "Let's vroom, vroom, vroom."
The fifth van said, "Let's go!"

We shall find a time to have this practise and act it as our stage performance for the theme of transportation.
