Role Play - Teacher (Part V)

Today, we continued with the role play. It would be the last group turns - Shang En & Xiao Xuan to take charge of an activity. However, Shang En tried her best to explain the activity that she wanted to carry out with the children, yet, they still can't really get exactly what she wants. So I suggested if we could change a little of the content of it and both of them agreed.

I guided the children to ask and the 'teachers' to answer all the rules and regulations for the activity. Basically, each group will be given a box of toys. They needed to discuss with their group members and form only one item from it. They don't build it but lay the toys on the floor to form a shape of things. There were about 17 children, therefore, the children were divided into 3 groups with 6 in two groups while 5 in another group. Shang En and Xiao Xuan distributed the toys to the children after they had sat in their groups and they walked around to help them.

Most of the children were still quite confused with my explanation. Yet, after I had demonstrated my idea to them, they started to visualize the shape that I requested. Then, they started to discuss with their group mates to come out with their own idea.

The children said they made a submarine! 

With my guidance, they worked together and make a sun.

They wanted to make an ice-cream and ended up of making a Popsicle with my guidance.  

They were inspired and managed to come out with a new design - starfish! Wonderful!

Role Play - Teacher (Part IV)

Today, it’s Chloe’s group turn. In her group, there were 4 of them as well – Xin Yee, Yi Ern, Eugene and Chloe. They wanted to organize a game for the children to play. They used some cones and rubber ring for their games.

Chloe explained that the children needed to throw the rubber ring into the cone to get a sticker as a reward. They children could try as many times as they could until they successfully got the ring into the cone.

The children were divided into 2 big groups for about 7 in a group. Then, they started their luck. However, only about 5 of them managed to get the ring into the cone.

Role Play - Teacher (Part III)

Today, we continued with the role play we started off from Monday. At first I thought we could have time for 2 groups of children to carry out their activities today, unfortunately, we could only allow 1 group to carry out the activity.

Therefore, I got Leow Xun, Sueanne, Xiang Qin and Qiao Yi to carry out their activity. They wanted to teach the children to dance. As a result, we got Leow Xun to explain their group activity.

Children: What shall we do?
Leow Xun: Two by two. (She means to get the children to stand two by two)
[The children quickly form a long line with two in a pair.]
Children: How do we dance?
Leow Xun: The tall one will stand, the short one will spin. (At first, the children were confused, I got Leow Xun to demonstrate to us. After the demonstration, the children tried it out.)

I got them to be careful when they got hold of their friend's hand when spinning as it might hurt their friend's finger. Then, one by one group they came to make a spin in the middle of the room.

After one round had done, Leow Xun asked if I could play them some music or songs so that they could dance with it. She even requested - Let it Go! Coincidence that I got that song on my thumb drive, therefore, I played them the song and they take turns to dance with it. How fun it was!

Field Trip - Butterfly Farm & Visit to the Fire Station

Field Trip - Butterfly Farm & Visit to the Fire Station

Field trip is always fun and excited for children! Today, we went to the butterfly farm and pay a visit to the fire station.

The children were excitedly exploring all the insects that they could find in the butterfly farm.

The children were observing a butterfly resting on a leaf. 

The children found a butterfly resting on some hibiscus flowers.

The children got excited when the caterpillar started to move.

They were observing the live cocoon of the butterfly. 

At the fire station, a very detail briefing was given to the children about fire precaution, fire safety etc. Besides that, the children even got a chance to ride in the fire truck and to control the water pressure from the hose. They had a wonderful and interesting field trip today!

Role Play - Teacher (Part II)

Today, we shall start with one of the group which they wanted to teach their student to sing a song. The group members are Zhi Yi, Yee Shuen, Yong Jun and Suzanne. They wanted to teach the children to sing - ABC Song. However, 4 of them were quite shy and didn't really get to teach but they sang the song together.

Role Play - Teacher (Part I)

This week I wanted to carry out an activity on the role play of a teacher. There were about 19 children in the class, therefore, I have to break them in groups to carry out the activities. 2 were absent today, therefore, the children were divided into 5 big groups. Then, they will sit down and discuss on the area that they wanted to teach such as drawing, reading, singing, dancing, playing games etc.

The children were divided into the following groups:-
Group 1 - Aiden, Devon, Jing Heng & Lucas
Group 2 - Shang En, Xiao Xuan & Zi Yue
Group 3 - Xiang Qin, Leow Xun, Sueanne & Qiao Yi
Group 4 - Yee Shuen, Zhi Yi, Suzanne & Yong Jun
Group 5 - Chloe Yi Ern, Eugene & Xin Yee

Each group except for group 2 (only one member was present on that day) had some discussions about the activities that they wanted to carry out if they were a teacher.

As a result, these were the outcome of their discussion

Group 3 - to teach a dance
Group 4 - to teach a song
Group 5 - play a game

Most of the groups couldn't really come out with any actual activities for the children except for Group 4 which they had decided on a song. We shall be able to carry out this activity tomorrow.

Revision

Revision

Today, we did some reading and revision of the vocabulary that we had learned so far. At the same time, we also sing some songs that we had learned during our earlier sub-topic such as the fireman song and the doctor song.

We didn't get to sing the doctor song according to the tune given. However, we tried again to today. Surprisingly, the children helped to stick to the tune while I furnished them with the lyrics. We managed to sing the song today! Hooray, the children even requested to sing that song twice. Wow, they must have gain a lot of singing practice from their weekly music class.

We spent another about 5-10 minutes to read through the vocabularies that we had learned. Besides reading in order, I also randomly pointed to the words for the children to have more vocab recognition about it.

Then, we spent another 15-20 minutes on reading practice.

Drawing of a Teacher

It has been a while since we have any drawing activities during our thematic class. Therefore, today, after we had our group discussion about teacher, I got the children to draw a picture of a teacher. They could draw the teacher teaching or in a classroom.

Our discussion was as followed. This time round, the children were able to speak more about the role of a teacher.

Teacher: What does a teacher do?
Chloe: Read a book. Teacher teaches ABC. Teach us do homework.
Jing Heng: Teacher mathematics. Let me go out and play. Teach me in thematic class.
Devon: Play computer and play with me. Teaches Mandarin. Teach me every day.
Aiden. Teach me Malay.
Zhi Yi: Teacher teaches from Monday to Friday.
Shang En: Teacher eating food. Teach me things in class.
Xiang Qin: Teach us Malay. Teach us writing.

After that, I distributed an A4 paper to each child for them to draw a picture of a teacher either in classroom or anywhere they think it's appropriate.
