Fire Fighter

As all the children had settled down, I asked if they wanted to share any thoughts about the movie - Billy Elliot that they had watched for the past three days. Then suddenly, a few of them started to stand up and spin like Billy did in the movie. Chloe mentioned about a part where Billy and his father were sitting on the fence and Billy pushed his father down. Then Billy also fell on his father and both of them laughed. Chloe said that scene is very funny.

By using this chance, I introduced a few vocabularies to the children. The vocabularies were as followed:

ballet dancer, tutu dress, spin, veterinarian, sick

I noticed the children were still playing with the doctor set toys during their corner time. Therefore, I shall just leave it for them to explore it themselves.

Today, we moved in to other occupations - fire fighter. The children learned a little about fire fighter when the Mandarin's teacher teaches them about the red fire engine in the morning. Therefore, I get the children to tell me what a fire fighter does.

Teacher: What does a fire fighter do?
Zhi Yi: push water to fire
Devon: Help the man to pour water to the fire.
Chloe: People got fire, fire fighter will go.
Devon: Take the cat or dog from the tree.
Sueanne: Catch snake. (she explained the situation in Mandarin)

Then, I briefly explained the job about fire fighter by referring to a book about the brave fire fighter (the book is in Mandarin, I did some translation on it).

Movie Sharing - Billy Elliot (Part III)

Today, we managed to complete the movie. I believe that the children might not truly understand every part of the movie but overall, they managed to understand that Billy has succeeded his dream of being a ballet dancer. The children were quite touching with his success at last.

The last part of the movie that we watched today covered the content below:

Jackie catches Billy dancing in the gym and realizes that his son is truly gifted; he will do whatever it takes to help Billy attain his dream. Mrs Wilkinson tries to convince Jackie to let her pay for audition, but he replies that Billy is his son. Jackie attempts to cross the picket line to pay for the trip to London, but Tony blocks him. Instead, his fellow miners and the neighbourhood raise some money and Jackie pawns Billy mother's jewellery to cover the cost. Jackie takes Billy to London for the audition at the Royal Ballet School. Though highly nervous, Billy perform wells, but he punches another boy in this frustration at the audition and the fear that he might have ruined the chances of attaining his dream. He is sternly rebuked by the review board but when asked what it feels like when he is dancing, he describes it is like electricity. Seemingly rejected, Billy returns home with his father. Sometime later, he receives a letter accepting him to the Royal Ballet School, and he leaves home to attend.

The final scene of the film is set fourteen years later. The mature Billy takes the stage to perform the lead in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake where Jackie, Tony and Michael watch in the audience.

Movie Sharing - Billy Elliot (Part II)

Today, we continued with the movie that we didn't finish yesterday. We used about 35 minutes to watch the movie today.

Today's movie basically, we covered the content mentioned below:

Mrs Wilkinson believes Billy is talented enough to study at the Royal Ballet School in London, but due to Tony's arrest during a skirmish between police and striking miners, Billy misses the audition. Mrs Wilkinson tells Jackie about the missed opportunity, but fearing that Billy will be considered to be gay, both Jackie and Tony are outraged at the prospect of Billy becoming a professional ballet dancer. However, over Christmas, Billy learns his best friend, Michael, is gay. Although Billy is not,  he is supportive of his friend.

The story has not ended yet, the children started to get excited and wanted to know what will happen to Billy. We shall continue with the movie tomorrow.

Movie Sharing - Billy Elliot (Part I)

I noticed that some of the children don't know what to say when they visit a veterinarian. Therefore, I used about 5 minutes today to teach them some simple sentences that they could use, not only when visiting a veterinarian, they could also used it when visiting a doctor themselves in the future.

Basically, these were the sentences that I get the children to make for the veterinarian role play :-

1) My pet is sick.
2) My pet is having a stomachache.
3) My pet's leg is hurt.
4) My pet had food poisoning.

I wanted to share an interesting movie with the children today - Billy Elliot.

This is a British movie that film about a boy who is interested with dancing and wanted to be became a ballet dancer. Yet, due to his gender, he was being doubted at first.

Billy's father sends him to the gym to learn boxing, but Billy dislikes the sport. He happens upon a ballet class that is using the gym while their usual basement studio is temporarily being used as a soup kitchen for the striking miners. Unknown to Jackie (Billy's father), Billy joins the ballet class. When Jackie discovers this, he forbids Billy to take any more ballet. But, passionate about dancing, Billy secretly continues lessons with his dance teacher Sandra Wilkinson's help.

We only managed to watch for about 30 minutes before we call it a day. We hope to continue with the movie the next day. The children do enjoy watching it though the British accent is a little difficult for them to catch what the actual conversation was.

Once the 4 veterinarian had done with their parts, those who acted as patients will switch to be veterinarian and I picked a new group of 4 patients for them. This is how the children did the turns for their role play. The children had fun playing with it. They could co-operate while using the toys as well. I'm happy to see that.

Video Sharing about Veterinarian

Today, we did some revision in describing what an occupation does. According to the big book exercise, there’s 4 occupations mentioned – policeman, postman, nurse and pilot. The children took turn to pick an occupation to describe by using the sentences given. Most of them could complete the task bravely. Well done!

Today, I have also prepared 2 videos to show to the children about veterinarian.

After watching the first video, I did some review back by asking questions about the video that the children had seen. Some of them who don’t understand will start asking questions. In order for the children to understand what the video is about, I kept guiding them by giving me answers of my questions.

We did the same with the second video. The children could somehow relate the job to treating and maintaining the health of the animals either in a farm or zoo.

Teacher: What did the vet do to your dog?
Chloe: Check the dog's eye.
Teacher: Did the vet give any medicine for your dog?
Chloe: Yes.

Teacher: Besides clinic, where could you find a vet? (At first, all the wrong answer were given until I give them a hint about the place where you could see animals.)
Children: Zoo.
Teacher: Will zoo animals get sick. (Some said no, some said yes)
Teacher: When you go to the zoo, do you want to see sick tiger? or lion?
Children: No.

Art and Craft : Tutu Dress (Part II)

Today, there’re a few children who brought back the homework that I asked them to complete last week. Therefore, I asked them to share their part with the class. After we did a few practice of asking the question – “What does your father do?” & “What does your mother do?” last week, this time, the children automatically will ask the question whenever a friend stood in front to guide them in answering the question.

This round we have Leow Xun, Yang Jun, Yi Ern, Qiao Yi, Aiden who did the sharing.

Art and Craft : Tutu Dress

Today, we are going to do an art and craft about tutu dress. The children all agreed that the colour would be pink. Therefore, I prepared the follow items for the art work today:

- some pink colour A4 paper
- some pink water colour (mixture of red and white)
- drawing board paper for each child
- some scissors and glue

I folded the A4 pink colour paper into half and draw a half oval shape on one side of the paper as the collar of the tutu dress. The children needed to cut according to the line. Then, they pasted their pink paper onto the drawing board paper that I gave each of them. Once they were done with that, they will come one by one to me to do the palm printing of the pink water colour.

I briefly show them how to print their palm on it and it's their turn to do it on their own. Some could get the idea while some just print it wherever he/she likes it.

However, the picture turns out to be quite pretty though. I was too busy guiding them and helping them, therefore, no pictures were managed to be taken during the activity. I shall post up the pictures of the art work soon.

Boys are involved in ballet too!

Aiden's sister learned ballet and she has the ballet dress. Therefore, Aiden brought it today and shared with the class.

Then, after that, I shared a few videos that show boys or men are involved in ballet dancing performance.

Video #1: Ballet Training
(Now, Aiden and the other boys in the class know that ballet is not just for girls.)

(In this video, we learned that the ballet dancer has to be light and flexible in their movement. The children were amazed to see how fast they could dance. )

(In this video, the children could see the male dancer who dances together with the female dancer to perform a show on stage. Most of the female dancers in this show wears a tutu dress. )

Now the children were more aware of the costume wore during a ballet dancing performance.

We shall carry an art work on Friday regarding the tutu dress.

Video #1: A day life of a ballet dancer -Discovery Ballet: A Day of Life in a Ballerina

Video #2: An Audio Reading of Ballerina Princess
(The children watched the video once then the second round, they read along with the story.)

Aiden: Teacher, ballet is for girls only.
Teacher: Are you sure?
Aiden: Yes, look, this is a princess story.

Since the children have an impression that ballet is only for girls. I shall arranged some videos that involved boys or man in a ballet dancing performance.

Children's sharing & Book Sharing

I gave some homework for the children to go home and interview their parents. Some of them gave me back their worksheet. Therefore, the children shared their parents' occupations with their classmates.

Every time when a child comes out with their paper for sharing, the whole class would asked:

"What does your father do?" and "What does your mother do"

Then each child would answer the questions accordingly with my guidance. Here are some pictures of those who shared - Chloe, Zi Yue, Xiang Qin, Zhi Yi, Yee Shuen, Xin Yee and Lucas.

After the children had shared their parts, there's still about 20 minutes left. Therefore, I read them a story - Fire Fighter Ted.

This time, Ted pretends to be a fire fighter. He always warns other about the dangerous of fire and safety precaution. The principal, Mr Bingham was not very happy with him giving orders around. However, at the science exhibition, something terrible happened. Mr Bingham's pants was on fire. Ted rushed to help him out immediately. Everyone was so relieved that Ted was there.

Book Sharing - Doctor Ted

This story is about Ted, who hurt his knee, became a doctor who wish he could heal or treat someone. However, his doctor role was not welcomed at home as well as in the school especially by the principal, Mr Brigham. Suddenly, one day, one of the children accidentally stepped on Mrs Johnson's leg (Ted's teacher). Ted came to help and Mr Brigham was pretty sorry about his attitude towards Ted earlier. Ted was satisfied with his doctor role and wanted to be a fire fighter when he woke up smelling something burnt the next day.

I explained and distributed the worksheet for the children to bring home to interview their parents. Hopefully, they could bring it back on next Monday.

Besides that, we shall try to start with the ballet dancer sub-topic. For those who had a ballet clothes, they could bring it to school for sharing purpose.

What does your father/mother do?

I have a large text book where occupations is one of the topic in it. We read through the types of occupations introduced in the book. This time round, the children were more familiar with some of the occupations that I have mentioned earlier this week.

Then, there's some sentences reading for the children to learn. The sentences given were as followed:

My father is a doctor.
He works in a hospital.

My mother is a teacher.
She works in a school.

My sister is a florist.
She works in a flower shop.

Then, the exercise requested the children to learn how to ask other about their occupations and to answer it.

The question given was: What does your father do?
                                     He is a _________________.

Therefore, I told the children that I will prepare a worksheet for them to go home and interview their parents about their occupations and write it down.

Book Sharing - When I grow up (Dora reading series)
This book shares about Dora's ambitions when she grows up. People around them did a different job. Dora wishes to be one of them as well such as archaeologist, animal rescuers, fire fighter, teacher etc.

After that, the children asked if they could colour the worksheet that I gave them yesterday. I agreed.

Worksheet - Get to know (cut and paste)

Before moving to any individual occupations that the children mentioned earlier this week, I get them to recognize the name of the occupations with their pictures.

Therefore, I prepared a simple worksheet for them to do today. It requires cut and paste.

The six occupations that I had chosen for this worksheet are : doctor, nurse, veterinarian, fire fighter, ballet dancer and clothes designer. (These were the few occupations that the children mentioned.)

Most of the children could individually complete the task given while some needed help and guidance.

When I grow up, I want to be....

I wanted to find out what does the children think about occupations. However, they could only tell me a few like fire fighter or policeman etc. Therefore, I brought in some flashcards of pictures of all kinds of occupations and see if the children could name me a few.

Then, I share a book about occupations - Barbie, Dream of the future.

This book is in Mandarin. Yet, I just went through the book with the children briefly to let them know there's other types of occupations that the children could explore into.

After going through the book, we did a conversation below:

Teacher: When you grow up, what would you like to be?
Zhi Yi: sew dress, dress designer
Leow Xun: ballet dancer
Xin Yee: clothes designer
Zi Yue: teacher
Yi Ern: vet
Xiang Qin: clothes designer
Chloe: fire fighter
Shang En: doctor
Jing Heng: fire fighter
Qiao Yi: nurse
Li Chiuan: fire fighter
Yee Shuen: fire fighter
Xiao Xuan: teacher
Shu Zheng: teacher
Lucas: fire fighter
Yang Jun: (he just grin at me and didn't say anything)

Looking at the occupations that the children mentioned, I believe they are also interested to learn about it. Therefore, we did a voting of which to learn first. After a round of voting, this would be the sequence of our learning for the next few weeks:

1) ballet dancer
2) vet
3) fire fighter
4) nurse
5) doctor
6) teacher
7) clothes designer

Dear parents, if you have any information about the above mentioned occupations such as books, vcd or even any magazines about it, you may let your child bring it to school to share it with their fellow classmates.

Brand New Start - Theme Topic Voting

It's year 2015! Welcome back to our blog! This year, we have about 11 6 years old children together with about 7 new 5 years old children. It's another brand new class. I do hope that the 6 years old children would guide the new children through the process of the thematic learning here.

Without much delay, I get the children to vote for the new topic for their English thematic class. These were the topics that they had suggested:

1) colours
2) transportation
3) occupations
4) clothing/dress

Each child could only vote twice. Therefore, they have to be sure which topic they were interested. After a round of voting, colours & occupations got the same votes. As a result, I have to get the children to decide again which one they want the most. Finally, "occupation" got the most votes.

Our new thematic topic would be - occupations.

Hopefully parents could co-operate in providing materials on books, vcd or even movies about occupations that they could find.
