Fruits & Vegetables Worksheet

Today, I prepared a worksheet for the children to do. The children needed to fill in the words – fruits & vegetables. Then from those supermarket’s leaflets they needed to look for fruits and vegetables to paste it at the space provided accordingly. Most of the children could do it individually while some needed some guidance.




Movie – Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball 2
Flint managed to save his friends from being grind by Chester V. Then Flint trying to capture Chester V but failed and Chester V managed to escape. However, Flint managed to put the food machine back to its place up on the mountain and all the plants started to grow back and produce more little foodimal. Everyone is happy with the ending.

Fruits Matching Activity

We went through some flashcards of the fruits last week. Therefore, today, I prepared some flash cards with only the name of fruits without the pictures. The purpose of the activity today is to let the children recognized the names of fruits.

I divided the class into 2 groups with about 9 in a group. One of the group will hold all the flashcards of the fruit’s name while the other group will paste the picture of the fruits on their body.

Those with the fruit’s name will have to search for the picture of the fruits and pair themselves up. After that the children exchange their role in the activity and we went through the activity again.

Movie – Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball 2
Flint managed to locate the food machine but Chester V actually lied to him. Chester V wanted the machine for himself and he re-programmed the food machine. When Chester V pulled the food machine from the connectors, all the plants started to wit. All the foodimal started to cry.

Flint and his father make a plan to save the foodimal from Chester V. They managed to fly themselves into LIVE Corp factory and found out that Chester V had captured his friends and wanted to grind them to make the food bar.

Can Flint save his friends and Shallow Falls?

We shall continue again whenever we have time this week.

Minerals & Digestion System

Minerals & Digestion System

We used the “Good Enough To Eat” book to go through some more information about minerals that our body needed. On the other hand, I also introduced the name of the digestion system and the important of chewing the food and water intake.

Then we continue with our movie – Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball 2.
Today, Flint and his gang went back to Shallow Falls just to find out that the whole island was covered with huge size food. All the foods are alive as well. They were nearly being eaten by a cheesespider and tacocodile.

With the influence of Chester V, Flint thinks that his friends are stopping him from completing the mission given by Chester V which is to place the USB onto the food making machine. The gang and Flint had conflict and they moved in different direction.

Will Flint manage to solve the problem? We shall continue again next week.

Note: There were some activity being carried out on 24th July which affected the class, therefore, the class was being cancelled.


On the other hand, it is Raya Holiday on 28th & 29th July (Monday & Tuesday). As a result, there will be no blog update for these dates mentioned above.

Worksheet – Fruits Matching

I wonder how much of the vocabulary of the name of fruits that the children could remember. Therefore, I prepared a simple worksheet for them today. Basically, I only included those fruits’ name that commonly used among them such as apple, orange, strawberry, pineapple, grapes and watermelon.

I wish the children could actually explore the name and remember them by themselves. Therefore, before we start, I wrote all those 6 fruits’ names on the board and get some children to come out to draw a picture beside it. Though some of them couldn’t really draw it precisely, anyhow, I just helped to make it looked more presentable.

Then I gave each child a piece of the worksheet with another colour paper of the 6 fruits’ name on it. They have to match the name of the fruit with its picture. For those who couldn’t recognize the words, they could come out to the board to do matching. Most of the children could do it individually without much help. Then after that, they could colour the pictures.

Most of the children are going to Kidzania Kuala Lumpur tomorrow. I will be following as well. As a result, there will be no blog update for 23rd July, 2014 (Wednesday)

Fruits and Vegetables

Today, we moved on to the next level of the food pyramid to fruits and vegetables.

We read parts of the book – “Good enough to eat”- A kid’s guide to food and nutrition by Lizzy Rockwell. Today, we looked at the vitamins and minerals that our body needs such as vitamins C, A and B Complex as well.

Besides that, we also read through about the important of fiber. By using this opportunity, I also mentioned about the important of us chewing our food in our mouth before swallowing it.

Then we went through some flash cards about fruits and their names such as apple, orange, pineapple, strawberry etc.

Since we have about another 15 minutes left, we continued with the movie that we left out the other day.

Today, the scene that we watched was about Chester V informed Flint that he has to go back to Swallow Fall island to trace back the food machine. He was asked to return to the island alone. However, he went and informed all his friends except his father about his plan of going back to the island. Somehow, his father noticed them and appeared at the harbour.

Will Flint manage to locate the food machine? We shall continue next time.

Pasta Making

Pasta Making

In order for the children to understand more about carbohydrates’ food, today, I prepared a cooking session for the children to explore about pasta which is one of the carbohydrates’ food on the food pyramid.

I have 4 different shapes of pasta and a tin of pasta sauce. Then I told the children that they will be given some pasta randomly on a paper plate. They have to design their paper plate with the pasta they have. After that, they will be given the pasta sauce to eat with it.

Cloudy with a Chance of ......

Cloudy with a Chance of …..

Today, we did an activity related to the movie that the children watched last week. The children had started to talk about the food they saw from the movie such as cheese burger, donut, ice cream etc.

Therefore, I prepare a worksheet for them to fill in the blank. The sentence goes like this – “Cloudy with a Chance of ……”

The children will decide what to fill in the blank and draw a picture in the cloud.

The children actually asked me last week if they could continue with the second CD this week. I told them we shall see if we got time to watch it. I will split the movie into a few days as we still needed to carry out some activities along with our theme.

Today, I only played about 15 minutes of the movie for them to watch.

This time, Flint saved Shallow Fall. However, there are a lot of big size leftovers in the island. Chester V from Live Corp who produce food bar for livings voluntarily wanted to help to clean up the island but the town people needed to be evacuated.

Flint was being offered to work on new inventions at Live Corp. Unfortunately his invention was not being picked. He went home sadly.

My Book about Yummy Food

I plan to get the children to do a book about food. I prepare the front page for the children to colour it beautifully. I also design a page for them to collect those foods that contains carbohydrates from those supermarket leaflets.

Most of the children could actually search for the food individually while some needed some guidance.


Note: It’s a public holiday on 15th July. On the other hand, I will be joining the school field trip for 4 & 5 years old children to the National Zoo on 16th July. As a result, there will be no blog updates for 15th & 16th July.

After watching the movie – Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball, I asked the children a question today – If Flint is in our class now, what would you want to order?

The children needed to say their order in full sentences by starting – I want to order….

Derek: I want to order spicy crab.

Yi Jie: I want to order ice cream and burger.

Then, I played them a “Fun Food Chant” from you tube. The children could catch up with the food chant quite fast and they enjoy it.

Video Watching – Cloudy with a Chance of a Meatball (part III)

We shall be able to complete the whole movie today.

Flint managed to program a code to kill the machine. He needs to fly into the storm to locate the machine to put the USB in it. When Flint and his friends got into the cloud, they realized that the machine is much out of control than they thought.

With much struggling and nearly injured, Flint managed to place the USB and stopped the machine from producing more unwanted food.

Everyone cheered when they got to know that the storm had been stopped. No more large size food will drop from the sky.

Drawing Session
The children requested if they could draw the food that they saw from the movie. I said, yes.

Therefore, we used the remaining 15 minutes for the children to draw whatever food that they could remember from the movie.

Video Watching – Cloudy with a Chance of a Meatball (part II)

Today, we continued with the movie.

Flint thought the machine was not a success. Somehow, the machine was successfully producing food from the sky as there’s water from the cloud. Therefore, once Flint communicated with the machine by ordering any food, the food will fall from the sky. People got greedy. They wanted more variety of food. The machine went chaos.

The machine needed to be controlled within the limit. However, it went into the dangerous zone and the size of food that it produced got bigger. The whole town went panic as large food size was falling from the sky. The cloud will create a big storm and might moved towards other country.

Can Flint stop the food storm?


We shall continue with it tomorrow again.

Game – I know the food pyramid & Movie Watching

Game – I know the food pyramid & Video Watching

This food pyramid game is for the children to familiarize themselves with it. During the warm up session, I allowed the children to choose whatever food they want and then they will jump or walk to the space of the food pyramid (I had laid down some divider on the floor to symbolize the food pyramid).

Once all of them had already gone through one round, I divided the class into two groups. Coincidently, there were 10 in each group.

Each round, there will be one representative from each group to stand in front of the food pyramid. They will need to move according to the food that I had given to them. Those who act fast and accurate will gain points for their group.

After the game, we only left for another 20 minutes before we call it a day. Therefore, I played them a short part of the cartoon – Cloudy with a Chance of a Meatball.

Flint always wanted to be a famous inventor. Although his invention doesn’t always work, he doesn’t give up. One day, he invented a machine where he could just put water in it and it will produce food according to orders.

The machine blew up and went up to the sky. Flint thought the machine is gone.


We only managed to reach here today. We shall continue with the movie either tomorrow or the day after.

A few categories of food were introduced on the food pyramid – grain/bread, vegetables, fruits, protein & dairy.

After I had explained the food that belongs to each of the group mentioned above, I distributed a worksheet of “My Plate” for the children to draw the food according to the category.

Some of the children could do it individually while some needed some guidance. Some of them even will look at the food pyramid that they did.


I thought we could have time to play at least one round of the food pyramid game. Unfortunately, it took the children more time to draw than I expected. Therefore, we shall postpone the game till tomorrow.

Food Pyramid & Game


Today, we gathered all the parts of the food categories that the children had worked on it yesterday. I prepared a bigger size’ manila card for the children to paste the parts on it to make it into a food pyramid. Besides that, I have also printed out some labels to be put at the side of each food categories.

Worksheet – Circle the food of the same categories

In this worksheet, there’s a few food listed for each line. The children needed to recognize and circle the food accordingly. Then the children would colour the pictures that they had circled.

Game – Which food in which category?

By using the food pyramid, the children needed to know which food belongs to which part of the food pyramid. I would name a food, such as chicken and then the children needed to move to that category on the food pyramid.

This would just be a warm up session as the children were not familiar with the food pyramid yet. We shall play this for a few rounds next week again so that the children had a better idea of it.

I have a Food Pyramid

We have got some extra leftover supermarkets’ leaflets from the previous class which was also doing the same food theme. Looking at the food pyramid chart we have, unfortunately, it was not in English. Therefore, today, I prepared the shape of the food pyramid and guided the children to make one of our own food pyramid.

Before the children started with the work, they were divided into four groups with about 4-5 children in a group. Then each group leader came out to pick a draw. These were the categories for the children to work on – carbohydrates, vitamins & minerals (fruits & vegetables), proteins & calcium and fats, sugar & salt. Each group was given the portion of the food pyramid accordingly to start with.


Once they were brief of the type of food they should look for, the children started to scan and cut the supermarket leaflets. Some of the groups were quite clear of what to look for while some needed some guidance.

Revision Activity & Book Sharing

Before going in to the book sharing session, we did some revision on the ingredients and process of the crepe making we did yesterday.

I wrote down the ingredients and methods on a piece of big line mahjong paper. I leave some blanks for the children to paste the words on it.

Book Sharing – Strega Nona

After that, I shared an old tale with the children – Strega Nona. I didn’t realize that story took us about half an hour to complete it.

This interesting story is about Strega Nona who was a witch. Though the people in the town always whisper behind her, yet they always look for her when they had trouble such as headache, looking for a husband or a wart.

Strega Nona is getting old and she needed a helper at home. After putting up the notice at the town square, Big Anthony came to see her. Big Anthony needed to keep the house clean, fed and milk the goat, weed the vegetables etc while Strega Nona will provide food and place to stay for him. However, there’s a magic pasta pot that Big Anthony was advised not to touch. One day, Big Anthony saw what Strega Nona did with the pasta pot, he was amazed and wanted to try it out on his own. Unfortunately, he didn’t watch the whole process of what Strega Nona was doing.

Once when Strega Nona was out of town, Big Anthony took out the pasta pot and sang as what Strega Nona did. The magic pot started to cook pasta and it was enough for the whole town to eat. Unfortunately, Big Anthony couldn’t stop it from cooking and it flooded the town with pasta. When Strega Nona came, she knew what’s going on and stopped it. Big Anthony was being punished to finish up all the pasta that he had cooked so that Strega Nona has a bed to sleep for the night.

We shall find one day to do something with pasta as our activity.
